The most common lamp mistake is not colour or style — it is scale. A tiny lamp on a wide console looks lost; a tall lamp on a slim nightstand looks top-heavy and tips easily. Getting light right starts with getting the size right relative to what it sits on. Here are the proportions that work.
The proportion rules
- Height: a table lamp should be roughly two-thirds the height of the surface-plus-context it sits in.
- Base width: no more than about one-third of the surface depth — leave room to use the surface.
- Eye line: seated, the bulb/shade should sit near eye level so you do not stare into the source.
Insight: scale is judged against the furniture, not the room. A lamp that is right for a nightstand is wrong for a console.
Size by surface
| Surface | Lamp height | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Small nightstand | ~25–40 cm | Compact accent lamp |
| Desk / dresser | ~40–55 cm | Task / bedside lamp |
| Console / sideboard | ~55–70 cm | Statement table lamp |
Rule: measure the surface first, then choose the lamp — not the other way around.
Two sizes, two jobs at Decor
- Compact surfaces — Decor Macaron Glass Table Lamp. A small ~22 × 29 cm form for tight nightstands and shelves, where a full lamp would crowd the surface.
- Larger surfaces — Decor Macaron Ceramic Desk Lamp. A taller ~51 cm build with a cloth shade for desks and dressers, sized to hold its own on a bigger surface.
