The material of a table lamp is not a finish choice — it decides how the lamp ages, how it diffuses light, and how much heat it tolerates. Most listings hide it in one line. In the lamps we curate at Decor, three materials cover almost every good option: glass, ceramic, and metal. Here is what each actually does.
The three materials, decoded

Insight: glass lets the body become the light source; ceramic and metal make the shade the light source. That single difference decides whether a lamp reads as an object or a glow.
Why it matters for the light itself
- Glass bodies (like a coloured accent lamp) create ambient colour and a soft internal glow — decorative, not for reading.
- Ceramic bases are opaque and stable, so the shade does the diffusing — ideal for controlled, glare-free task light.
- Metal is structural and reflective — excellent for directing light where you want it.
