The one rule that fixes most rooms: eye level
When you're seated, the bottom of the shade should sit at roughly eye level. Too high and the bare bulb glares at you; too low and it only lights the table. Get the shade to seated-eye-height and the light spills softly across the room instead of into your face.

Think in a triangle, not a spotlight
One lamp lights one zone. Two or three, spread around the room, create a soft triangle of light that removes harsh shadows and makes the space feel bigger. This is the same layering logic behind every calm, well-lit living room — no bright ceiling light required. A couple of well-placed table lamps almost always beat one overhead fixture.
Two quick fixes
- Glare check: sit down. If you can see the bulb, the lamp is too tall or the shade too open — raise the surface or choose a more diffusing shade.
- Dead corner: the darkest corner is almost always where a lamp earns its keep. Light it and the whole room balances.
