LED Strip Lights: What They're Actually Good For (and What They're Not)

An LED strip is an accent light, not a room light. That single distinction decides most of the disappointment around them. Bought to add depth behind a TV or under a shelf, a strip is close to perfect. Bought hoping it will light a room the way a ceiling fixture does, it will always feel dim and directionless — because it isn't designed to do that job.

What a strip is actually built for

  • Bias lighting behind a screen. A strip behind a TV lights the wall, not your eyes, which measurably reduces the contrast strain of a bright screen in a dark room. We cover the mechanism in bias lighting and eye strain.
  • Under-shelf or under-cabinet definition. A thin line of light along the underside of a shelf outlines the object above it rather than flooding the room — depth, not brightness.
  • Colour accents. A strip along a headboard, a desk edge, or a media unit adds a coloured line without competing with the room's actual light source.
  • Motion-triggered wayfinding. A strip is also the practical choice for a closet rail or step edge — covered in our motion-sensor night light guide.

None of these is "light the room." All of them are "add a line of light somewhere specific."

The three specs that actually differ between strips

Every listing says "LED strip." The real differences are in the numbers underneath:

Spec Why it matters
LED density (LEDs per metre) More LEDs per metre means a smoother line of light with less visible dotting — a TV backlight strip in our range runs 30 LEDs/m; a neon-style strip runs 120 LEDs/m for a fully diffused line
IP rating (waterproofing) IP20 means indoor and dry only — fine behind a TV, wrong for a bathroom or anywhere near a sink. IP65-and-up tolerates splashes and damp, needed outdoors or in a kitchen
Fixed colour vs RGB vs sync Fixed warm or cool white is enough for most accent uses; RGB adds colour changing; a screen-sync strip (like a TV backlight kit) reads a small camera and matches the strip's colour to what's on screen in real time

Matching the strip to the job

What you're lighting What to look for From our range
Behind a 55–75" TV, synced to what's on screen Screen-sync with a companion camera TV Backlight Sync Strip — 30 LEDs/m, Bluetooth app control, sized for 55" or 65–75" screens
Closet rail, pantry, or stairs, only lit when needed Motion-activated, with a daylight-disabled mode Motion Sensor LED Strip — waterproof, three modes including a "Moon" setting that stays off in daylight
Outdoors, a patio edge, or anywhere it might get wet High LED density, genuinely waterproof, flexible Waterproof Neon Strip Light — 120 LEDs/m, bendable, rated for outdoor use
Running strips around a corner cleanly A dedicated corner connector matched to your strip's pin type L-Shaped Strip Connector — fits 2-pin and 3-pin 8–10mm strips

Installing one without the common mistakes

  1. Decide what you're outlining before you buy length — measure the actual run, including corners, rather than guessing.
  2. Mount just behind the edge of what you're lighting (a shelf lip, a TV's rear edge) so the strip itself stays out of direct view and only its light shows.
  3. Keep the adhesive backing on a clean, dry, dust-free surface — most strip adhesive fails within weeks on a textured or dusty surface, not because the strip is faulty.
  4. If running around a corner, use a proper corner connector rather than folding the strip sharply — a hard fold can crack the internal circuit at that exact point.
  5. Check the IP rating before mounting anywhere near steam, splashes, or outdoors — an indoor-only strip left in damp conditions will fail at the connections first.

The honest verdict

Buy a strip to add a line of light somewhere specific — behind a screen, under a shelf, along a closet rail — and it will do exactly what you wanted. Buy it hoping it replaces your main room light, and no strip will fix that; that's a job for a proper ceiling or floor fixture, sized using our room-by-room lumen guide.
